South Fork Merced RiverSouth Fork Merced River

Proposed Wilderness Area

Due to its outstanding rare plant populations, this area was recommended by the Forest Service in 1991 as the Bishop Creek Research Natural Area because of its Pacific Ponderosa Pine stands, and currently houses the Devil’s Peak Botanical Area. One of the rarest plants in the world, a Sierra National Forest endemic and state-listed rare plant, Clarkia lingulata, occurs just downstream of the roadless area. With a designated California Wild Trout Stream running through it, this area is also significant to the local commercial outfitter industry.
