San Rafael
Proposed Wilderness Additions
This unique area is currently threatened by potential oil and gas exploration, which could irreversibly alter many of its outstanding cultural and ecological qualities. Housing the headwaters for rivers that are critical for nearby agriculture, these areas are identified by the US Forest Service as having High Ecological Significance, forming the northern slope of one of only two traverse mountain ranges found in North America. Twenty years ago, the reintroduction effort for the California condor began in Lion Canyon, adjacent to the additions, and two of only three eggs to hatch from the Condor population this past year occurred here. These areas are also home to many sacred Native American sites, including ceremonial places, rock art, and burial mounds.
