Proposed Wild and Scenic River

Cottonwood Creek is home to a pure strain of the federally Threatened Piute cutthroat trout, and is an essential element in the US Fish & Wildlife Service draft recovery plan for the species. Wild and Scenic River status would protect the only desert stream in North America from its headwaters at over 12,000 feet to its terminus in the desert far below.
