CahuillaCahuilla Mountain

Proposed Wilderness Area

Cahuilla Mountain is a historical location in California, the setting for one of the most famous novels of early California history – Helen Hunt Jackson’s Ramona, published in 1884. The mountain is adjacent to the Cahuilla Tribe Reservation in Riverside County, and provides a water and view shed for the Anza Valley. The area is home to mountain lion, deer, quail and other species taking refuge within the Jeffery Pine and Black Oak forests along this foothill region of the southern San Jacinto Mountain region, as well as the Large-blotched Salamander and Red Diamond Rattlesnake, both species of concern. A Research Natural Area for Coulter Pine and Black Oak is also part of this potential wilderness.
