Congressman Darrell Issa Asks for Comments on Potential New Wilderness Areas
U.S. Representative Darrell Issa is seeking feedback from his constituents about his recent proposal to expand Beauty Mountain Wilderness and Agua Tibia Wilderness in northern San Diego County by over 20,000 acres. This is an excellent opportunity for his constituents to support his efforts to protect our magnificent wild places while also urging him to designate other important wilderness areas and wild rivers in his district.
Representative Issa’s proposed “Beauty Mountain and Agua Tibia Wilderness Act of 2009” will add over 7,000 acres to the existing Agua Tibia Wilderness and will expand the Beauty Mountain Wilderness by an additional 13,635 acres.
The proposed bill affects only public lands and expands the wilderness protections in Riverside County championed by Representative Mary Bono Mack and signed by President Obama in March 2009. Characterized by deep canyons and coastal sage scrub, Agua Tibia is enjoyed by thousands of hikers and equestrians each year who travel through the region via the rugged Cutca Trail.
As its name implies, Beauty Mountain is a scenic jewel draped in chaparral, fascinating rock formations and oak woodlands. Both of these areas provide endless recreational opportunities as well as pristine habitat for wildlife. Representative Issa deserves much praise for proposing protection for these outstanding wild areas on our public lands.
Please take a moment today to e-mail Representative Issa to thank him for his efforts. You may also ask him to expand his proposed bill to include other potential wilderness areas and wild and scenic rivers.
Please include in your e-mail any personal experience you may have with these wild places.
Representative Issa is seeking feedback on his legislative proposal until August 17, 2009. So don’t wait. Click here to act now.
Many threats face the California desert: Power lines, mining, excessive off-road vehicle use, and military expansion just to name a few. Now is the time to preserve our last remaining wild places.
In order to convey the importance and urgency of this effort, we need your help. Please take a few minutes and write a personal, unique, letter that we can deliver to Congress expressing your support for protecting our wild places in the desert.
