Conservation Groups Applaud Legislation on Proposed Pinnacles National Park and Wilderness Additions
Conservation groups praised U.S Rep. Sam Farr's (D-Salinas) introduction of a bill today to create Pinnacles National Park. The legislation, which would upgrade Pinnacles from a National Monument, also designates additional Wilderness.
"The legislation that is being introduced for Pinnacles National Monument is just the most recent of a long line of conservation and Wilderness efforts championed by Congressman Farr. Congressman Farr’s work to protect public lands and wild rivers in his congressional district should be lauded," said Sam Goldman, California Wilderness coordinator for The Wilderness Society.
"The California Wild Heritage Campaign, a coalition of hundreds of businesses and organizations around the state, stands with Congressman Farr to highlight the importance of this ecological and geological gem in the Central Valley."
Gordon Johnson, a conservation leader who has worked for many years on land protection efforts in the region, said "By creating Pinnacles Park we are highlighting the importance of this beautiful area in the heart of California. Congressman Farr understands how conservation efforts can improve local economies and pass on our wild heritage to future generations."
By designating additional Wilderness in this legislation, Congressman Farr is ensuring that these lands will remain in their natural state in perpetuity. "We look forward to working with Congressman Farr on future efforts to protect wild lands and rivers in the 17th Congressional District," said Goldman.
