Sacramento River
More than 40 organizations have endorsed legislation to establish a 17,000-acre Sacramento River National Recreation Area (NRA) in Northern California. The river provides outstanding opportunities for canoeing and rafting, as well as fishing for trophy-sized rainbow trout and fall-run Chinook salmon.
Early in 2007, two bills were introduced in Congress to designate public lands along the river upstream from Red Bluff. One of the bills, S 811, introduced by Sen. Boxer and Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), has garnered strong support from a diverse group of interests, including the City of Redding and Shasta and Tehama Counties.
NRA designation of these 17,000 acres of public lands would protect and provide national recognition of outstanding recreational qualities, as well as provide the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) with improved tools to manage the area.
