Big Sur
UPDATE: On November 6,2009, Rep. Sam Farr introduced legislation that would protect wild lands and rivers along the coast. For more information visit our blog or our Big Sur regional partner group, Ventana Wild.
Many spectacular waterways flow throughout the Central Coast, within the Ventana and Silver Peak Wilderness Areas and along the Big Sur Coast. Because their upper watersheds are largely undisturbed, these rivers and streams are important source of clean water for Monterey County residents, farmers, and industries.
Their highly productive ecology includes rich riparian habitat, the world's souther-most redwood forests, and the rare Santa Lucia fir. They provide opportunities for popular outdoor recreation, and they are rich in historic and pre-historic culture.
The Ventana Wild Rivers Campaign - led by Friends of the River and the Ventana Wilderness Alliance -- is working to protect these outstanding rivers and streams by adding them to the National Wild & Scenic Rivers System.
