Photo of Incense CedarAs one moves from lower to higher elevations a full spectrum of western Sierra trees are found—Black and Canyon Live-oak, Yellow and Gray Pine, then Douglas Fir and White Fir. The old growth areas are rich with Red Fir and harbor huge examples of Incense-cedar and Sugar Pines. At the highest elevations you find Lodgepole and Western White Pine, Mountain Hemlock and Western Juniper.

The range of altitude and microenvironments means that wildflowers of dazzling variety are blooming from early spring through fall.

Photo of Mariposa LilyOne finds here a diversity of birds and mammals not found at the higher altitudes where most of California's current Wilderness Areas are located. Apart from the sheer variety of animals, this area hosts a number of species that are dependent on old growth forests and are in serious decline. At least seven species of birds and five species of mammals found in American River Wildlands are considered threatened, of special concern or sensitive by the US Fish & Wildlife Service and/or the California Department of Fish & Game or US Forest Service. Among the very few sightings of Wolverines in the Sierra in recent history, two occurred in the American River Wildlands.
