Sally Miller, one of the Campaign’s fabulous Eastern Sierra Organizers, was able to speak with Mary Kay about her participation and contributions to saving our state’s wild lands and rivers. The following interview details what keeps Mary Kay volunteering and what she enjoys most about her experience. Occupation: Retired citrus ranch owner, manger in Ventura Co. Retired mental health professional in Santa Barbara County. Geographic Location: Eastern Sierra, Mammoth Lake How did you get involved in the Campaign? I’ve always been active in Sierra Club when living in Santa Barbara. After moving to Mammoth, a Sierra Club friend brought me to a Wilderness meeting organized by Sally Miller. I was impressed by her knowledge and commitment to preserving this fabulous area. What’s your most rewarding experience as a volunteer? Two things; 1. Knowing that I’m helping to preserve the wild lands I love 2. Getting to know a wonderful community of people who also cherish our wild lands. What keeps you involved? Every time I go hiking in the mountians and experience the backcountry sounds, smells, and visual delights, I want others to be able to share this unspoiled country. What’s your favorite outdoor activities? Hiking and backpacking, Skiing, both Nordic and Alpine What do you consider the personal and professional benefits of volunteering? Do you have any advice to new volunteers? Go to a national meeting if possible. It is very energizing. What’s your favorite outdoor memory? Maybe not favorite, but most memorable. Was being caught in a 3 day snowstorm while back backing in the Los Padres National Forest with an experienced team and watching the very different reactions of people in coping with survival. Thank you for making a difference in the wilderness community! Get involved today - Volunteers and Interns are always needed. |
