Community Hiking Hosts Inaugural Open House

NEWHALL, CA – The Community Hiking Club will hold our inaugural open house on May 6 at the Placerita Nature Center. The open house will take place from 10 am to 3 pm at the Placerita Nature Center located at 19152 Placerita Canyon Road in Newhall.

The Community Hiking Club is a The Community Hiking Club is a partnership between the California Wild Heritage Campaign, the Placerita Canyon Nature Center, and other community partners. The goal of the hiking program is to give individuals, families, and organizations within the community the opportunity to explore Santa Clarita's beautiful natural areas. With this effort, the Campaign hopes to promote healthy lifestyles and an appreciation of local scenic outdoors.

The community can visit www.californiawild.org/santaclarita for additional details. The website features a hiking guide, virtual tours of Santa Clarita's outdoor wonders, and photos. After visiting the website, interested parties can call the Placerita Nature Center and arrange a hike around their schedule with a trained hike guide.

“This program is a terrific way for us to get kids active in the local outdoors,” said Matt Nelson, Education Director of the Boys & Girls Club. “Our young people can learn about nature, enjoy being surrounded by plants and animals, and have fun exercising. We plan on making the Community Hiking Club an important component of our recreational activities.”

The Community Hiking Club is leading hikes to Placerita and Whitney Canyons, Castaic Mountain, Magic Mountain, Piru Creek, and Pleasant View Ridge. Sponsors of the Club include Los Angeles County, Junior Chamber of Santa Clarita Valley (SCV), Santa Clarita Park and Recreation and Community Services, Environmental Committee for the Chamber of Commerce of SCV, Boys & Girls Club of SCV, National Hispanic Environmental Council, Sky Blue Realty, Cub Scout Pack 2, Friends of the River, Sierra Club of Santa Clarita Valley, and Placerita Nature Center.
