31 Miles of Cache Creek Given OK to Run Free
SACRAMENTO, CA – Yesterday Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed AB 1328, a bill introduced by Assemblywoman Lois Wolk (D-Davis) that added 31 miles of Cache Creek to the state’s system of wild and scenic rivers. The section of Cache Creek runs through Lake and Yolo Counties. Designation of the creek as wild and scenic would prohibit new dams and water diversions and help protect the creek’s extraordinary scenic, recreational, wildlife, and fishery values.
“We worked many years alongside so many people to garner Wild and Scenic status for Cache Creek. There has been tremendous support from local electeds, business leaders – including the Woodland Chamber of Commerce – and thousands of individuals. I am extremely grateful to the many local activists, the Governor and the bi-partisan support of the California Legislature for guaranteeing this level of protection for a wonderful part of our wild heritage,” said Traci Sheehan, Campaign Director of the California Wild Heritage Campaign.
“Governor Schwarzenegger and Assemblymember Wolk deserve the heartfelt thanks of all Californians who support protection of our remaining heritage of free flowing rivers,” said Peter Ferenbach, Executive Director of Friends of the River. “By introducing and signing AB 1328, the Governor and Assemblymember Wolk helped re-establish river and environmental protection as a truly bi-partisan issue in California,” he said.
Only 1% of California’s rivers are currently protected with Wild and Scenic designation. Over 4,000 miles of waterways have been identified as potential candidates for Wild and Scenic designation.
