Environment Concerns Vintners/Conservationalists

By Katrina Frey, Owner of Frey Vineyards

LETTER TO THE EDITOR - Your March 21 article highlights some of the concerns shared by conservationists and vintners alike. As a resident of Mendocino County and a vintner, I care deeply about the beautiful lands, rivers and wildlife that surround the North Coast. A number of environmentally conscious winemakers and growers have joined in an effort -- called "Wild Vintage'' --to support permanent protection of potential wilderness and wild and scenic rivers. Our primary focus has been in support of the Northern California Coastal Wild Heritage Wilderness Act. This bill will protect more than 300,000 acres of wild lands and 21 miles of river along the North Coast for the benefit of both our local economy and future generations.

In fact, some of the areas included in the bill provide critical terrain for Oak woodlands, essential to the survival of many wildlife species. The North Coast bill gives us an opportunity to forever save areas such as the proposed Sanhedrin Wilderness and Snow Mountain Wilderness additions.

We are committed to producing wine of the highest quality while caring for both the planet and palate, I am proud to work with fellow vintners on supporting efforts to conserve some of our most ecologically critical wild places.
