Timbuk2, a leading manufacturer of lifestyle bags and accessories, is well known for its commitment to protecting the environment. A member of the California Wild Heritage Campaign’s Wild Alliance, Timbuk2 has worked in a variety of ways to protect our state’s last remaining public lands. Their most recent effort came at the beginning of October. Wilderness activists from around the state gathered in Joshua Tree National Park for a weekend of hiking, camping, and camaraderie, and Timbuk2 volunteered to provide all attendees with bags. Thanks, Timbuk2! To learn more about Timbuk2 and its support for wilderness we caught up with Macy Allatt, Timbuk2’s senior marketing manager. Macy explains Timbuk2’s interest in the environment, the importance of wilderness to their customers and employees, and a number of initiatives that Timbuk2 has launched to ensure the sustainability of its product line-up. Q & A with Macy AllattWhy did you join CWHC? Timbuk2 is a San Francisco based company that is strongly committed to the sustainability of the world we live in. We are advocates for the protection and preservation of California’s wildlife and wilderness so that current and future generations can continue to enjoy all that this beautiful state offers. So Timbuk2 and CWHC are a natural match. What is the focus of your business? Timbuk2 is a leading manufacturer of messenger bags, day packs, computer carrying cases, and other lifestyle bags and accessories. We were founded in San Francisco 18 years ago by a working messenger and are still committed to providing jobs locally in our San Francisco factory. How does your focus relate to nature and the environment? Timbuk2 is strongly committed to preserving the natural environment. In addition to advocating for wilderness, Timbuk2 fights to preserve the local urban environment around us through promoting bicycle advocacy, donating bags to homeless youth and providing jobs in our factory. What drew you to the Campaign? As a California company that is part of the Outdoor Industry, Timbuk2 is very concerned with the future of our environment. Timbuk2’s passion for preserving California’s wilderness comes from the fact that our customers and employees enjoy backcountry recreation year-round and want future generations to continue to enjoy what wilderness offers. Why should businesses care about the environment? Put simply – because they can make a difference. The way a business is run impacts the environment, and whatever we can do to make less of an environmental footprint will be better for the sustainability of the world we live in. For example, Timbuk2 is removing all of the PVC from our line and rapidly introducing more products with recycled and sustainable materials. Where can our activists find you?
What instantly comes to mind when you hear the word wilderness? Space, trees, mountains, rivers, wildlife, peace, adventure. Accessibility to nature. Beauty, spirit. |
